Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps convert heat contained within the air into
energy that can then be used to provide heating and hot water. They
are classed as a renewable energy source because the heat taken
from the air is replenished by the sun.
There are two types of air source heat pump - 'air to air' and
'air to water'. Air to air heat pumps release captured energy
through an air heat exchanger, which is then released - either
directly or forced around the home using a fan and ducting. Air to
water heat pumps release the energy into a water circuit which is
connected to a traditional wet heating system or underfloor
heating.
Air Source Heat Pumps
These are ideal for use where it's not possible to drill a
borehole or lay surface collectors for a ground source heat pump.
They are generally used to complement more traditional heating
systems, and typically deliver up to 80% of the space heating and
hot water requirements for a well-insulated building, while the
existing system delivers the balance on the coldest days or during
peak demand. Air source heat pumps can be used with underfloor
heating systems and radiators, but an additional back-up heating
system such as a high efficiency boiler will be required.
Exhaust Airheat Pump
These are designed for small dwellings and extract air via
ductwork connected to the warm areas of the building such as
bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms. This heat is then
transferred to water for general use and heating.
Air to Air
An air to air heat pump can provide both heating and cooling,
and some models have air purification technology which is
beneficial to allergy sufferers.
The heat pump comprises an outdoor and an indoor unit which
converts heat energy in the air into heat for your home.
Not recommended for larger properties, but ideal for
conservatories and apartments.
