For many years a trench has been filled with unsustainable wet concrete. Today we have other options for constructing foundations; options which perform better thermally, are produced from recycled materials and are less harmful to the environment. Foundation blocks offer excellent thermal performance and save time and money.

Research by leading surveyors Davis Langdon LLP has shown that constructing a foundation with aircrete foundation blocks is up to 24% cheaper than cavity aggregate block foundations.

They also reduce ground floor heat loss by up to 25%, therefore reducing the need for additional floor insulation.

Foundation blocks are made from aircrete (also known as Autoclaved Aerated Concrete, AAC). Aircrete is one of the lightest forms of concrete, yet it is fully load-bearing with a range of block strengths available up to 8.7N/mm2.

Below ground level, aircrete blocks are resistant to sulphate attack and frost damage, which means they can be used where other masonry types are unsuitable. They also have third party certification for use below the damp proof course (DPC) level in foundations.

Aircrete blocks are fully certified for use in both the outer and inner leaf of cavity constructions, as well as solid foundations in sulphate bearing soils and groundwater Classes DS-1, 2, 3 and 4. This means that aircrete can be used in ground conditions which could be permanently saturated.

Aircrete blocks also provide sound insulation performance that is equivalent to much heavier blocks of the same thickness and are fully compliant for use under the Robust Details scheme.

Save time

One aircrete foundation block replaces two 100mm concrete blocks, which means that the laying rate is twice as fast. Trenches can be backfilled as soon as installation is complete. These blocks have impressive load-bearing capabilities, and are also exceptionally resistant to freeze/thaw conditions. Aircrete blocks are the only material that can be used with the thin jointing method. For further information on this method speak to your local Jewson branch.

Trade Tips

  • Aircrete blocks are easy to use and can be cut using simple hand tools.
  • Being up to a third of the weight of dense aggregate concrete blocks, aircrete blocks are easier to handle.
  • Ordering wet mixers with timed deliveries doesn't always run efficiently. Having blocks on site ready to work means no delays.

Homeowner Benefits

  • Aircrete block foundations can reduce your ground floor heat loss by up to 25%.
  • Aircrete blocks provide great sound insulation performance.
