UK-GBC: Low carbon plans pleasing March 10, 2010

The government's consultation about how to address the need for a low-carbon future in the UK has been welcomed by one building organisation.

Planning plays an important role in taking control of climate change, the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) has said.

As such, it said the government's green planning proposals to allow local authorities to play a lead role in delivering sustainable community infrastructure was important.

Paul King, UK-GBC chief executive, stated that it is pleased the government had listened to its suggestion of placing councils at the centre of change.

"Investment in so-called 'allowable solutions' requires a strategic overview that can only come from planners with local knowledge of the best sustainable energy options available," he added.

Communities and Local Government yesterday (March 9th) announced that three planning policies had been changed to allow councils access to the latest climate change targets.

A "green planning rulebook" would enable sustainable developments to be planned and built with the goal of a reduction in carbon emissions.
