More support 'required' for female entrepreneurs December 13, 2007

Female entrepreneurs would like more "on-going support" when starting their business if they are to succeed, an influential industry expert has claimed.

Woman's support association Prowess suggested that while male businessmen - including those in the construction sector - like intermittent help, women prefer it to be an ongoing dialogue.

Alice Kent, a researcher for Prowess, said the lack of help is putting young women off from starting their own firms, especially those between the ages of 18 and 24. She stated that women also like more help before the business is launched.

She added: "Women value pre-enterprise support and ongoing personal training. They also welcome mentoring relationships and the chance to exchange ideas with someone with previous experience of setting up in business".

According to data from the Labour Force Survey 2003, a quarter of the UK's 3.2 million self-employed workers are women.
