Logistics

As part of our drive to reduce CO2 emissions Jewson have made substantial investments in the vehicle fleet.

We have invested in the most fuel-efficient diesel technology available replacing 388 lorries, 364 forklifts and 1369 cars in 2005 alone. Improvements in delivery planning have also contributed to the reduction in CO2 emissions over the last few years.

Leading the way by moving away from the distribution centre model

With the exception of Jewson Internal Timber Supply (JITS) Centres, Jewson has made a considered decision not to use in-house distribution centres. Closing our distribution centres has enabled us to minimise lorry miles, on-site inventory and packaging waste as well as helping us to reduce emissions and take heavy traffic off the roads.

Instead, a central order desk establishes which branch is best placed to service a customer's site, and manufacturers and suppliers deliver direct to that local branch. Jewson branches can consolidate orders and hold until the customer requires the material and maintain delivery flexibility by providing bulk or sameday delivery according to their needs. Consolidation allows us to remove unnecessary packaging passing on cost savings to the customer.

Moving away from the traditional distribution centre model has resulted in savings of over £6million and removed the carbon footprint created by operating a large warehouse. Inventory has also been reduced by around £10million.
