Chain of Custody

Available through more than 150 branches nationwide, the Jewson certified timber service has been developed to comply with a range of policies put in place to ensure timber is sourced from 'legal' or 'legal and sustainable' sources.

What is Chain of Custody?

Chain of Custody is a process that, using independent auditing, rigorously documents certified timber from the forest to the final point of purchase.

The process tracks timber through each stage of the supply chain, from forest and logging through sawmill, factory and distributor, to timber merchant and contractor.

This provides a level of transparency and traceability to guarantee compliance with demands for ethically sourced timber products.

Why is it important?

Certification of timber supply is becoming ever-more important as Government and other large contractors - such as those registered with the BRE Ecohomes scheme - increasingly demand that timber products used are from environmentally accountable sources.

Environmentally Accountable Sources

Timber that qualifies for Chain of Custody is sourced from forests certified under schemes that fall into one of two Government-defined categories: 'legal' and 'legal and sustainable'. Both categories guarantee timber has been harvested legally and as part of an overall forest management system.

Jewson can provide Chain of Custody certification for products certified by all the schemes in support of official Government procurement policy, and as appraised by the Central Point of Expertise on Timber (CPET).

How is sustainable timber recognised?

All certified timber must be clearly identifiable and directly linked to the supplier's documentation. This may include labelling or marking but certification must be clearly shown on the delivery ticket and invoice. The supplier must also have a valid Chain of Custody certificate.

The Jewson Service

Chain of Custody certified products are available through more than 150 Jewson branches across the country with further branches continually gaining certification. As part of the service, trained staff members are on hand to offer advice and discuss your Chain of Custody requirements in detail.

Chain of Custody branches may stock product certified to any of the approved schemes and also timber that is not certified. It is therefore essential that you discuss your requirements prior to your order being placed.

Our relevant certification numbers are:

  • PEFC certificate BMT-PEFC-0023
  • BM Trada Forest Products Scheme certificate BMT-COC-0054

Under each of these schemes there are minimum requirements for the percentage of raw material that must be certified. For more detailed information please click here.
