Wall & Floor Construction
External walls and floors can make a significant contribution to the environmental impact of a building. When it comes to construction, there are a huge number of options available with varying impacts and levels of sustainability.
As a general rule the lower the mass of materials and the less the energy used in the manufacturing processes, the more favourable the environmental impact. Therefore, systems such as timber framing and aluminium systems perform well and can achieve up to an 'A' rating in the Green Guide to Specification (depending upon materials used).

Alternatively, traditional brick and block cavity wall construction can also perform well if the right materials are chosen; for example aerated blockwork can be used for the inner leaf and lime mortars make recycling of brickwork more feasible. Once again this method can achieve up to an 'A' rating in the Green Guide to Specification.
