Garage Conversions & Extensions

Converting a garage into an office, bedroom or playroom is an economical way to add space and value to your home. Depending on whether the garage is integral or detached it is already likely to have much of the infrastructure that is required to meet building regulations.

The first thing to do is to assess what additional works need to be carried out in order to complete the conversion. Will it require any general building work such as laying a new concrete floor? Are the walls insulated and do they require plasterboarding and skimming? What new windows and doors will be required? Can natural light be introduced by using a sun tunnel or dome?

Once the preliminary work has been undertaken it's time to consider how this new addition to the family home is going to be decorated. Jewson carry an extensive range of paints including everything from priming to emulsion to gloss.

Flooring choices are extensive and are dependent upon what the garage conversion is going to be used for. A good value laminate will provide a durable covering that will stand up to everyday knocks. For something a little more luxurious why not go for a high quality engineered wood flooring that is easy to lay and gives a stunning finish.

Another thing to consider is how the room will be heated. A new radiator could be plumbed into your existing central heating system. Alternatively an electric storage heater or fan blower could be installed. It's always wise to assess respective energy prices before making a choice.

When converting your garage it is also absolutely necessary to find out whether you need planning permission. This will depend upon many different factors such as the additional floor area that has been added to your property and how the conversion will finally look. Contact your local planning authority before you start to convert.
